KUWAIT CITY, Sept 6: A Sri Lankan domestic worker has returned to her home country from Kuwait, where she received the largest compensation ever awarded to a domestic worker in the Middle East following a sexual assault, reports Al-Seyassah daily. According to the Sri Lankan newspaper ‘Daily News’, the 32-year-old woman from the Mahyangana district received compensation totaling 6.8 million Sri Lankan rupees, equivalent to approximately 21,000 US dollars, as a result of a sexual assault she suffered at the hands of her employer’s son in Kuwait, which resulted in her becoming pregnant.

The report further stated that her employer had secretly brought a doctor to the house to perform an abortion on her and had threatened her not to disclose the incident to anyone. As her health deteriorated due to the abortion, the employer took her to the airport and provided her with a ticket to return to Sri Lanka. However, airline officials refused to allow her on the plane due to her condition, and they subsequently informed the Sri Lankan embassy. The Sri Lankan embassy filed a lawsuit against the employer in Kuwait, and after a lengthy legal battle, the court awarded compensation to the victim.
