VATICAN CITY, Nov 16: Oscar-winning director Spike Lee gifted Pope Leo XIV a personalized New York Knicks jersey during a private audience at the Apostolic Palace, marking a memorable first meeting between the Hollywood icon and the pontiff.
Thunderous applause filled the frescoed Clementine Hall as Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost and the first U.S.-born pontiff, concluded his speech on the role of cinema in inspiring hope. The audience included prominent actors, directors, and producers, with Australian actress Cate Blanchett seated beside Lee in the front row.
As the Pope finished his address, Lee stood, holding up a Knicks jersey emblazoned with the number 14 and “Pope Leo” on the back, presenting it to the pontiff amid cheers from attendees. Later, he formally gifted the jersey to the Pope, a moment he described as unforgettable.
“It was a surprise to me that I even got an invitation,” Lee told journalists. “I've been to Rome many times, but this was my first visit to Vatican City and my first time meeting the Pope. It was a great day.”
A lifelong Knicks fan, Lee humorously linked the Pope’s election to New York basketball fortunes, calling it a “Holy Blessing” in a social media post. While the Knicks fell short in the 2024-2025 NBA Eastern Conference finals against the Indiana Pacers, they are currently second in the East with an 8-4 record.
Pope Leo XIV, like his predecessor Pope Francis, has shown an interest in sports. A native of Illinois, he has publicly supported Chicago teams, especially the White Sox. Lee noted the Pope’s ties to Villanova University, alma mater to three current Knicks players—Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart—adding a playful connection to the gift.
Despite uncertainty over whether the Pope is a Knicks supporter, Lee left Vatican City with both a treasured memory and insights into cinema from the pontiff, alongside the satisfaction of sharing a personal gift.
