Speaker, MPs praise Turkish govt for foiling coup attempt

KUWAIT CITY, July 17: National Assembly Speaker Marzouk Ali Al-Ghanem congratulated the legitimate Turkish authorities for their success in restoring national stability after the coup attempt in Turkey last Friday.
In a cable to Turkey’s Grand National Assembly Speaker Ismail Kahraman, Al-Ghanim said: “We reject any attempt to overthrow the legitimate government and deviate from the fundamentals of democracy.” He also paid tribute to the Turkish people for writing a national epic through their loyalty to the democratic regime. Al-Ghanim added, “We follow up with great concern the events in Turkey.
The will of the Turkish and their commitment to their elected government saved the country from tragedy and bloodshed while restoring national stability.” He affirmed that Kuwaitis are in solidarity with the Turkish in maintaining stability of the latter’s regime.
He expressed sincere condolences to the families of those killed during the coup attempt and reaffirmed his confidence in the ability of the Turkish authorities and citizens to efficiently deal with the consequences of the crisis. On the other hand, Deputy Speaker Mubarak Al-Khurainej, in a telephone conversation with Turkish Ambassador to Kuwait Mourad Tamir, congratulated the latter on the victory of the legitimate and constitutional government as well as the people of Turkey in upholding democracy.
MP Hamoud Al-Hamdan pointed out that the actions taken by the Turkish in standing firm by the legitimate and elected government while thwarting the military coup should be emulated by other rulers and their people. “We praise Allah who prevented bloodshed of Muslims in Turkey and foiled the military coup attempt,” he asserted. He went on to say that if the coup succeeded, God forbid, the compass and balance of power in the region would have changed. He asserted, “Turkey is currently one of the biggest supporters of the Gulf’s position on many security and military issues.” Meanwhile, MP Abdul Rahman Al-Jeeran has proposed confiscation of camels and cattle left to graze near highways and impose fine on the owners. He explained his proposal aims to reduce traffic accidents caused by these animals.
In another development, MP Saleh Ashour submitted a bill on the amendment of the Housing Welfare Law in order to give the children of a Kuwaiti woman married to a non- Kuwaiti the right to inherit their mother’s house in case of her death. In his explanatory note, the MP argued Housing Welfare Law number 47/1993 has disregarded the fact that the Constitution stipulates equality of rights and responsibilities for male and female citizens. He cited Article Seven of the Constitution stating, “Justice, freedom and equality are the pillars of society while cooperation and compassion are links which bind all citizens.”
