Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez
MADRID, April 10: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Friday renewed his call for the European Union to suspend its association agreement with Israel, accusing the country of violating international law through its military operations in the Middle East.
Speaking at the European Pulse Forum in Barcelona, Sánchez said Israel was “trampling on and violating many of the articles” of the EU–Israel agreement, particularly those related to respect for international and humanitarian law. He warned, “Let us not allow a new Gaza in Lebanon,” highlighting concerns over regional escalation.
His remarks came amid heightened diplomatic tensions following Israel’s decision to expel Spain from a U.S.-led humanitarian coordination group involved in aid delivery to Gaza, although Sánchez did not directly reference the move during his speech.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar responded on the social media platform X, stating he had informed U.S. officials in advance of Spain’s exclusion. He also criticized what he described as Spain’s “obsessive anti-Israel bias” under Sánchez’s leadership.
The dispute adds to growing friction between Spain and Israel as divisions deepen within Europe over the ongoing conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
