TEHRAN/WASHINGTON, Jul 8: Multiple explosions were reported across southern Iran early Wednesday, with Iranian state media reporting blasts in several locations, hours after the United States announced it had launched military strikes against Iran over attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state television reported six explosions in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

The semi-official Fars News Agency said 10 explosions were heard in the southern city of Sirik, while four additional blasts were reported in Misin village on Qeshm Island.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and Iranian authorities had not disclosed the cause of the explosions.

Shortly afterward, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it had begun launching "a series of powerful strikes" against Iran in response to what it described as Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM said the operation was intended to impose "heavy costs" on Iran, accusing Tehran of targeting civilian-crewed commercial shipping in an international waterway.

"Iran's demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire," CENTCOM said.

The strikes mark a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran following attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes for global oil and gas supplies.
