KUWAIT CITY, March 31: A huge fire that erupted at Al-Mubarakiya popular market on Thursday gutted scores of adjacent stores, Kuwait Fire Force declared. Up to eight squads battled the blazes amid heavy smoke from scorching stores, the KFF public relations officer said in a statement. The force was informed about the fire at 3:20 p.m. and blazes spread in the beginning to 20 stores, he said, indicating that the blazes engulfed the shops so quickly because they were packed with inflammable materials including perfumes and leather products.

The firemen struggled to put out the blazes with some difficulties such as presence of many people at the market, he said, urging people to stay away from the scene and affirming that the firemen surrounded the flames and took measures to prevent the blazes from spreading any farther. Emergency plans at general hospitals were activated after 14 cases reported so far from the huge fire at Al-Mubarakiya popular market on Thursday, said the Ministry of Health.

The fire gutted scores of adjacent stores, Kuwait Fire Force declared earlier, as four out of the 14 cases were transferred to Amiri hospital; one to Al-Babtain Center for Burns and Plastic Surgery, while nine cases were treated on-site and are all stable, according to ministry spokesperson Dr. Abdullah Al-Sanad. Injuries varied between minor burns and mild suffocations. (KUNA)
