Son of Norway's crown princess charged with rape and assault
Marius Borg Hoiby

OSLO, Aug 18: Marius Borg Hoiby, 28, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, has been charged with rape, domestic violence, assault, and other offenses following a year-long police investigation, prosecutors said Monday.

Hoiby, who holds no royal title and is outside the line of succession, is expected to stand trial early next year. If convicted of the most serious charges, he could face up to 10 years in prison, the prosecutor added.

Hoiby’s lawyer, Ellen Holager Andenaes, confirmed that he denies the most serious allegations, including rape and domestic violence. He has not yet appeared in court to formally enter pleas.

Police previously detained Hoiby for one week in November 2024 during the investigation. On Monday, prosecutors filed charges covering 32 offenses, including one count of rape with sexual intercourse and three counts of rape without intercourse, some of which were allegedly recorded on his phone, said Prosecutor Sturla Henriksboe.

Hoiby was first named a suspect in August 2024 in a case of physical assault against a former partner. At the time, he admitted causing bodily harm while under the influence of cocaine and alcohol, as well as damaging her apartment, and expressed regret for his actions.

“The courts will hear this case and reach a decision,” the royal palace said in a statement.
