WASHINGTON, Oct 20: The United States is deploying a third aircraft carrier strike group and up to 10,000 additional sailors and Marines to the Middle East amid escalating tensions with Iran and reports that President Donald Trump is considering renewed military strikes against Tehran.
The deployment includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier strike group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is travelling with the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to US media reports citing American officials.
The reinforcements are expected to reach the region in the coming weeks, with the ships reportedly scheduled to arrive by the end of November.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego, California, on September 27, while the Marine expeditionary unit and the amphibious group sailed the following day, according to Fox News. The carrier subsequently visited Japan before continuing its deployment, the US Naval Institute reported.
The carrier strike group comprises approximately 6,000 sailors, while the Marine expeditionary unit and amphibious group account for roughly 4,200 additional personnel. The combined deployment could therefore add around 10,000 personnel to the US military presence in the region.
The incoming forces are expected to reinforce the American naval presence alongside the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, according to Fox News. The exact composition of forces operating in the region may change as ships rotate and deployments progress.
Military buildup amid Iran tensions
The deployment comes as Washington and Tehran remain at odds over nuclear issues, regional security and the Strait of Hormuz. US media reports have linked the military reinforcement to preparations for the possibility of renewed hostilities if diplomatic efforts fail.
However, the deployment itself does not confirm that Trump has ordered fresh strikes against Iran.
The additional aircraft carrier and Marine forces would give US commanders greater flexibility to conduct naval and air operations, reinforce regional bases, protect American personnel and respond to potential threats.
The arrival of the new forces would also increase the United States' capacity to sustain operations in the region if tensions escalate further.
The deployment adds to the demands on an already heavily committed US military, particularly its naval forces, as Washington balances operations in the Middle East with its other global security commitments.
With the additional forces still en route, the scale and timing of any further US military action remain uncertain.
