KUWAIT CITY, Nov 22: Secretary of the Women’s Cultural and Social Society Haifa Al-Mousa revealed that around 2,000 cases of violence and marginalization against women were recorded in Kuwait, according to statistics issued in 2023. Al-Mousa made the statement to the newspaper on the sidelines of the cycling marathon organized by the Society with the theme, “Together for a Safe Environment for Women and Girls,” in cooperation with Soroptimist Kuwait, a volunteer organization concerned with women’s issues globally.

She pointed out that the announced figures do not accurately reflect the reality due to lack of awareness among a large segment of women about Law No. 16/2020 on protection from domestic violence, which was issued after the emergence of numerous cases of violence. She said the hotline designated for reporting cases of domestic violence—one of the tools for activating the new law—has yet to be operational, which prevents many women and children from reporting the violence they are experiencing. She stressed that combating all forms of violence is a societal responsibility, indicating that abused women often live in a closed cycle, which negatively affects their ability to raise their children and may unconsciously drive them to inflict the same violence on their children.

She said the marathon is the first of its kind between the two organizations and coincides with the global ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign, which runs from Nov 25 to Dec 15. She announced that the Society will organize a series of events and activities in the coming days as part of the campaign, including the screening of a film about the oppression and marginalization of women on Nov 26 at its headquarters. She urged the public to follow the social media accounts of the Society to be updated on its activities and events aimed at raising awareness and combating violence against women, and to participate in them.
