KUWAIT CITY, Aug 2: The Ministry of Interior has introduced a new smart home vehicle impoundment system under Resolution No. 1090 of 2026, published in Sunday's issue of the official gazette “Kuwait Alyoum.”

The resolution defines smart home impoundment as the detention of vehicles at the owner's residence using modern technology and according to regulations set by the General Traffic Department.

Under the new system, the Traffic Department can allow vehicles involved in violations listed under Article 207 of Ministerial Resolution No. 81/1976 to be impounded at the owner's home upon request. The vehicle will be monitored through a special device installed for the duration of the impoundment period.

Vehicle owners requesting home impoundment will have to pay an additional KD 10 installation fee if an impoundment officer visits the residence to install the device. The department will also charge a KD 2 daily service fee for the smart home impoundment.

The resolution requires vehicle owners to avoid tampering with or damaging the device, pay its cost in case of damage, follow movement restrictions set by the Traffic Department, return the device after the impoundment period ends, and report any malfunction.

The decision also states that violators of the smart impoundment rules will be subject to penalties under Article 34 of Decree-Law No. 67/1976. The resolution takes effect from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
