Singapore to destroy May general election ballot papers

SINGAPORE, Nov 10, (Xinhua): Singapore will destroy the ballot papers and other documents used in the general election held in May this year, the Elections Department and the Prime Minister's Office said Monday in a joint release. In the May election, the ruling People's Action Party secured 65.57 percent of the popular vote, up from 61.24 percent in 2020.

Voter turnout stood at 92.47 percent, with a total of 2,429,281 votes cast. According to the release, all sealed boxes containing ballot papers and other documents will be transported from the Supreme Court, where they have been kept in safe custody, to the Tuas South Incineration Plant for destruction on Nov. 22.

The Elections Department will contact candidates or their representatives to invite them to witness the proceedings. Under Singapore's Parliamentary Elections Act 1954, ballot papers and other election materials must be sealed and retained in safe custody for six months. They are then destroyed unless otherwise directed by order of the president.
