Shrimp Season Starts Strong in Kuwait With 13.8 Tons Delivered to Markets

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 2: Kuwait’s seafood markets received 13.8 tons of local shrimp on the first day of the shrimp fishing season in the country’s economic waters, with expectations that supplies could increase to around 20 tons daily next week as fishing operations stabilize.

Head of the Fishermen’s Union Abdullah Al-Sarheed said local shrimp, known as “Um Na’eera,” returned to markets in large quantities following the opening of the season on August 1.

He said the first day witnessed the supply of 600 baskets of shrimp, including 500 baskets at Al-Kout Market and 100 baskets at Sharq Market. On the second day, markets received another 442 baskets, including 300 baskets at Al-Kout and 142 baskets at Sharq.

Al-Sarheed said the availability of local shrimp is expected to increase further in the coming days as fishermen expand their operations.

He stressed that sufficient quantities of fish are available in local markets at reasonable prices, supported by both local catches and imported seafood supplies.

Al-Sarheed said imported fish continues to enter Kuwait’s markets despite regional tensions, helping strengthen food security and ensuring seafood remains available throughout the year.

He added that regional conditions have affected fishing activity in Kuwait and other Gulf countries, influencing supply levels and causing fluctuations in market prices.
