KABUL, Nov 18, (Xinhua): A total of 10 shops were destroyed as a market caught fire in the mountainous Khawhan district of northern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province on Monday, Provincial Police Spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar said Tuesday.
The fire, which occurred early Monday, destroyed 10 shops, causing an estimated loss of some 10 million afghanis (more than 150,000 U.S. dollars) for shopkeepers, the official asserted.
An investigation has been initiated into the case to determine the reason for the destructive accident, the official said. Residents of the mountainous Khawhan district in Badakhshan have long been regarded as among the poorest in the province. The region has little access to roads and highways.
