MUSCAT, Jul 16: A shooting near the Imam Ali Mosque in Wadi al-Kabir, a district east of Muscat, Oman, resulted in at least four deaths and several injuries in a rare act of violence in the Gulf nation. The attack occurred early Tuesday during a significant religious event for Shia Muslims. Video footage from the scene shows people fleeing as gunfire erupts, with the mosque's minaret visible in the background and a voice crying out, "Allah Ho Akbar!"

Omani police have implemented "all necessary security measures and procedures" to manage the situation, according to an initial statement that confirmed four fatalities and several injuries. Authorities are actively gathering evidence and conducting investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Some victims are believed to be Pakistani nationals, as indicated by Pakistan’s ambassador, who visited three hospitals and met with the wounded. The Pakistani embassy urged all Pakistanis in Oman to cooperate with local authorities.

In response to the shooting, the US Embassy in Muscat issued a security alert, canceled all visa appointments for the day, and advised US citizens to remain vigilant, monitor local news, and follow local authorities' directions. This violent act, occurring on the Muslim day of Ashura, when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, is unusual for Oman, known for its low crime rate and frequent role as a regional mediator. Ashura is observed differently by Sunni Muslims, who fast on this day.
