WASHINGTON, March 4, (Agencies): Over the weekend, a shooting incident unfolded at a local high school in Missouri, resulting in injuries to both a child and an adult, as reported by authorities.

The incident occurred during a basketball game at North Kansas City High School on Saturday. Two Clay County Sheriff's Office deputies, who were on duty at the game, responded to the sound of gunfire and discovered a crime scene outside the school, as revealed by North Kansas City Police during a press briefing on Saturday night.

In a Sunday afternoon update on X (formerly Twitter), North Kansas City provided more details about the ongoing investigation. The two victims have been identified – one is a student at the high school with "non-life threatening injuries," listed in stable condition, and the other is an adult not affiliated with the school district, also in stable condition. Both victims were promptly transported to local hospitals for medical attention.

In a social media statement, the city expressed shock and sadness over the events at NKC High School, extending thoughts to the victims, their families, Hornet families, visitors to NKCHS, and the entire NKC community. The community was urged to share any information related to the shooting with Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers.

Initially listed in critical condition on Saturday night, both victims' conditions have since stabilized. The incident occurred following a basketball game between North Kansas City and Staley high schools, with the adult victim found at the entrance to the school's football field, prompting witnesses to report seeing an individual fleeing the scene.

"We appreciate the community’s support as we continue our investigative work to bring forward a successful conclusion to this senseless act of violence," added the city in a subsequent statement on X.
