KUWAIT CITY, Nov 4, (Agencies): Kuwait has witnessed a significant advancement in cancer awareness, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the "First Step" volunteer team in cancer prevention and support for cancer survivors. The team organized an event to honor cancer survivors, which brought together a large gathering of supporters, patients, and survivors.

The event marked the culmination of the team's month-long "Pink October" campaign, previously known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign focused on raising awareness about cancer risks, early detection, and prevention.

Badr Al-Fadli, the head of the "First Step" team, emphasized that this year's tribute to survivors is the seventh annual event of its kind. He explained that the "Pink October" campaign was rebranded as "Shanatira" from last year onwards, with a focus on early breast cancer screening. The campaign ran throughout October, featuring ten lectures presented by cancer survivors and specialist doctors. It also included eight awareness exhibitions and several panel discussions on the disease.

Al-Fadli noted the significant progress made in cancer awareness in recent years, with Kuwait fully embracing the pink ribbon symbol throughout October, in addition to the Ministry of Health's support for early screenings and expanded appointment availability during this period.

Khaled Al-Musbah, a volunteer with the "First Step" team, explained that the name "Shanatira" was chosen for its simplicity and ability to reach a broader audience. The campaign spanned a full month and concluded with the honor ceremony, recognizing over 40 cancer survivors. He pointed out that although the number of honorees has increased over the years, their ultimate goal remains cancer prevention.

Cancer is no longer as frightening as it once was, thanks to advances in medical treatments and recoveries. The "First Step" team, founded in 2015, is comprised of volunteers dedicated to disease prevention and spreading health awareness among all members of society. Their activities include organizing events, lectures, sports activities, and celebrations.

The ceremony included speeches by cancer survivors who shared their personal journeys from illness to recovery. A doctor also emphasized the importance of regular screenings, early detection, and ensuring the highest chances of treatment and recovery.

The event showcased Kuwait's dedication to raising cancer awareness and promoting early detection, marking a significant step forward in the fight against this disease.

In related news, it was reported that there have been 640 cases of breast cancer in Kuwait, making it the most common type of cancer locally and globally. The fight against cancer remains a priority for both the government and various organizations in Kuwait.
