KUWAIT CITY, Aug 26: Assistant Undersecr-etary for Development Affairs at Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Hassan Kazem revealed about the establishment of a shelter for women who are subjected to repeated violence and assault, reports Al-Qabas daily.

He stressed that the Family Supreme Council is in the process of constructing an integrated building for these women.

Kazem explained that the women’s shelter will be a new step towards increased attention and concern for women affairs in the society. The building will include two parts – the first building will be for the purpose of psychological consultations and discussions related to the problems and issues of the battered women, while the second building will be for sheltering them.

It is worth mentioning that non-profit organizations and activists for the past many years have been calling for the establishment of a shelter and refuge for such women. They have been exerting efforts to direct attention to this critical issue.

Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Ministry of Health has pulled out of the Gulf Approved Medical Centre Association (GAMCA) agreement – an agreement signed among the GCC countries for the recruitment of workers, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting sources.

They explained that the GAMCA agreement had specified a number of GAMCA-accredited hospitals and medical centers in the Philippines where medical examinations will be conducted on Filipino workers bound to the GCC countries. However, Kuwait’s Ministry of Health pulled out from the agreement and is instead dealing with a private company that is running medical examinations in some other hospitals.

The sources indicated that the costs of medical examinations under GAMCA are by far cheaper and of better quality.

They stressed that the Gulf Approved Medical Centre Association is an accredited establishment that for over ten years has been conducting health check-ups for foreign workers who seek to come to the GCC countries for work.
