KUWAIT CITY, Dec 14: Sharjah of the UAE emerged victorious at the first West Asia Women’s Volleyball Championship, which concluded at the Salwa Al-Sabah Hall under the patronage of Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi.
Sharjah secured the title with a 3-0 win over Al-Fatat in the final, while Al Ula of Saudi Arabia claimed third place by defeating Al-Nasr of Jordan in the third-place match.
The closing ceremony was attended by Sheikha Naima Al-Ahmad, Chairperson of Salwa Al-Sabah Club; Ali Al-Kuwari, President of the West Asia Volleyball Federation; Mohammed Al-Kuwari, Secretary-General; Dr. Jaber Al-Mari, President of the Kuwait Volleyball Federation; Naif Al-Khumaili, Assistant Secretary; and heads of delegations from the participating teams.
Sheikha Naima Al-Ahmad emphasized that the success of the first edition of the tournament was achieved through the collaborative efforts and participation of all involved. She said:
"The championship was a success both technically and organizationally, as confirmed by all 12 participating clubs. This was possible thanks to the combined efforts and commitment of everyone to showcase the tournament at its best."
She added that this success motivates the organization of future continental-level events, expressing plans to host an Asian Women’s Championship in the near future.
Ali Al-Kuwari highlighted the tournament’s success on both technical and organizational fronts, noting that the competition reflects the rapid development of women’s volleyball in West Asia. He added that the championship served as an important platform for talent discovery and enhancing competitive experience among players, stressing the need to continue supporting women’s tournaments and expanding participation to raise the level of competition regionally and continentally.
Al-Kuwari also praised Salwa Al-Sabah Club for its role in hosting the event, commending the organization, logistics, and technical management—from preparing courts and scheduling matches to providing optimal conditions for participating teams. He said the club’s efforts set a model standard for hosting regional sports events.
Dr. Jaber Al-Mari lauded the organizational and technical success of the championship and praised Sheikha Naima Al-Ahmad for her key role in delivering a successful event that highlighted Kuwaiti volleyball. He affirmed that the federation supports all tournaments held in Kuwait.
Fatima Al-Alili, Head of Team Sports at Sharjah Club, congratulated the club management, coaching staff, and players for earning the inaugural title through deserved victories against strong competition from West Asian clubs.
Ahmed Al-Anizan, Secretary of the International Volleyball Federation Referees Committee, praised the high standard of refereeing throughout the tournament, noting their crucial role in ensuring smooth matches. He added:
"We aim to prepare top referees for any championship in Kuwait and showcase their true abilities, which have been recognized by all participants."
