DUBAI, Apr 22: A second cargo ship came under attack on Wednesday in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the British military, shortly after an earlier incident in which Iran’s paramilitary forces opened fire on a container vessel in the same area.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre said it received a report from the second vessel stating it had been fired upon and subsequently brought to a stop in the waterway. However, the agency did not immediately identify the source of the attack.
Suspicion has fallen on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which was earlier reported to have opened fire on a separate container ship in the strategic shipping route. Tehran has not issued an immediate response regarding the second incident.
UKMTO said no damage was reported in the second attack.
The incidents mark a sharp escalation in maritime tensions in the region and come just days after the United States seized an Iranian-linked container ship and boarded an oil tanker associated with Iran’s oil trade in separate operations in the Indian Ocean
