Phase 2 evacuation of overseas citizens to begin soon

KUWAIT CITY, April 6: In an apparent internal migration trend, scores of expatriates have begun moving toward the remote parts of the country in search of low cost accommodation after the suspension of work at all levels in order to cope with the high cost of accommodation and blackmail by landlords, reports Al- Shahid daily.

Many landlords affirmed that the consequences of coronavirus could be seen in the suspension of building construction activities and closure of restaurants under the implementation of Cabinet’s decisions through which many employees have been deprived of salaries since March or April. They added the temporal absence of courts leaves no option for tenants and landlords except to reduce the rent or allow temporal exemption.

Meanwhile, the second phase of the plan to evacuate Kuwaiti citizens from overseas, which will be launched within a few days, will include new procedures, the most significant of which is to allocate a location of gathering for Kuwaiti citizens in Europe and those stranded in Asia, in order to facilitate the evacuation process, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting informed sources.

Point
They revealed that Vienna has been agreed on as the point of assembly for citizens in Europe; however, search is ongoing to find an assembly point in Asia that meets the necessary conditions such as health safety, low rate of coronavirus spread, easy accessibility, and availability of hotels and necessary services.

The sources explained that the priority of evacuation will remain as it was in the first phase. People with serious health conditions, people with special needs, elderly citizens (those exceeding 65 years of age), minors without breadwinners, stranded students, and tourists who were stranded for a long time overseas.

The number of Kuwaiti citizens who are yet to be evacuated is nearly 2,800. The plan of the second phase will include new countries such as Turkey where nearly 3,000 citizens are living. There is a possibility that the Kuwaiti citizens in Turkey and France will be evacuated with the citizens in Switzerland as well as the few citizens in many other countries in a single flight to Kuwait.

The sources didn’t rule out the launch of a new air bridge next week, but revealed that the decision of its launch is awaiting approval of Ministry of Health and the readiness of the medical staff and quarantine centers.
