RIYADH, Oct 27: The Saudi-led coalition said early Tuesday that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi group toward Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
The coalition did not specify the intended targets or provide details of any casualties or damage resulting from the attempted attack.
On Monday, the coalition reported intercepting and destroying three drones over the Riyadh region and southern Saudi Arabia. It did not identify the origin of the drones or disclose their intended targets.
The coalition also announced airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, saying the operations destroyed ballistic missile launchers, storage tunnels and a missile depot.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the strikes were aimed at dismantling the Houthis’ ballistic missile network and disrupting their supply routes.
The latest developments come amid an escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since July, alongside renewed fighting between the group and Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s government against the Houthis since March 2015.
The Houthis have controlled the capital, Sanaa, and other parts of Yemen since September 2014.
