SURREY, Jun 5: A 21-year-old Saudi Arabian former student has been charged with attempted murder after a university staff member was shot with a crossbow at the University of Surrey’s Manor Park Student Village in Guildford.

Police said Almunthir Daqamah was arrested after officers were called to the campus at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday following reports of a serious assault. The victim, a male campus safety officer in his 50s, suffered significant injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he is now in a stable condition.

Daqamah has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article, and possession of Class B drugs. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Guildford Magistrates’ Court.

Surrey Police Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said officers are working “at pace” to establish the full circumstances of the incident. He stressed that there is currently “nothing to suggest this incident is terror-related” and confirmed that no other suspects are being sought.

Authorities urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues, adding that officers remain in close contact with the university.

A University of Surrey spokesperson said the institution was relieved to hear that the injured staff member is now in stable condition and wished him a full recovery. The university also praised its campus safety team for their “professionalism and courage” in responding to the incident.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.
