RIYADH, Oct 16: Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals convicted of committing what authorities described as an immoral act (sexual intercourse) inside a mosque in Makkah, the Kingdom’s Ministry of Interior announced.
The couple were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar. Their executions were carried out in the Makkah region on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, according to a statement issued by the ministry and carried by the Saudi Press Agency.
The ministry said security authorities apprehended the two following the incident. Investigations led to formal charges being filed against them, and the case was referred to the competent court.
The court found them guilty and imposed the death penalty under ta’zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law. The ministry said the ruling took into account the gravity of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the time and place in which it occurred.
The verdict became final after being upheld by the competent authority, and a royal order was issued to implement the sentences, the statement said.
The ministry reaffirmed the Saudi government’s commitment to maintaining security, upholding justice and enforcing Islamic law against those who violate the sanctity of mosques or commit offences against personal honour.
It also warned that those who commit similar offences would face the punishment prescribed by law.
Bangladesh consulate seeks clarification
Bangladesh’s Consulate General in Jeddah said it had not been notified in advance of the executions, according to a report published by The Daily Star on October 16.
A consular official said the mission had submitted a diplomatic note to Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeking formal acknowledgement of the matter.
The Saudi authorities’ public statement did not specify the precise nature of the act, identify the mosque involved or provide details about when and where the two individuals were arrested.
