Saudi Arabia Announces 16th June Start of Hijri New Year

Riyadh, June 15: The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia announced on Monday that the crescent moon marking the beginning of the month of Muharram had been sighted, confirming the start of the Islamic New Year 1448 AH.

The authorities said that Monday would be the final day of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH, while Tuesday, June 16, would be the first day of Muharram and the beginning of the new Hijri year.

In its statement, the court offered prayers for the success of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Mohammed bin Salman, asking God to reward them and guide Muslims toward unity and righteousness.

The announcement marks the official commencement of the Islamic year 1448 AH in Saudi Arabia and is expected to be observed by several countries that follow the Kingdom’s moon-sighting decisions.
