KYIV, Aug. 5: At least 17 people were killed and 44 others injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone assault on Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Zelenskyy said the attack involved 24 ballistic missiles, including Tsirkon and Oniks missiles, along with 115 drones, many of them jet-powered.
According to the Ukrainian president, the strikes targeted warehouses, critical infrastructure and a railway station, causing significant damage across the capital region.
Following the attack, Zelenskyy urged Ukraine's international partners to strengthen the country's air defense capabilities by providing additional ballistic missile interceptors. He also called on the Group of Seven (G7) and the European Union to impose tougher sanctions on Russian manufacturers of ballistic missiles.
Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 475 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black and Azov seas during the same overnight period.
In Russia's Rostov region, Governor Yury Slyusar said more than 40 drones were shot down over the Tarasovsky, Kamensky, Millerovsky and Neklinovsky districts. Falling debris reportedly ignited a dry grass fire in the Neklinovsky district, which was later extinguished.
In the neighboring Tula region, Governor Dmitry Milyaev said a drone crashed at a Wildberries sorting center, sparking a fire. Two apartment buildings and two industrial facilities were also reportedly damaged, while one person sustained injuries.
In Russia's Republic of Tatarstan, district head Mikhail Afanasyev said debris from a downed drone caused a small fire at a civilian facility in the Zelenodolsk district. The blaze was quickly brought under control, and no injuries were reported.
The claims made by both Ukraine and Russia regarding the attacks and resulting damage could not be independently verified.
