KUWAIT CITY, Feb 16: Russian Ambassador to Kuwait Vladimir Zheltov disclosed that the Embassy of Russia celebrates the Armed Forces Day, also known as Defender of the Fatherland Day, on Feb 23 each year. In his speech at a reception held on the occasion, Zheltov stated that this day, which is rooted in the history of the Soviet Army, is a firmly established national occasion in contemporary Russian history. Commander of the Land Forces Artillery Brigadier General Faisal Al-Ajil, along with several military officials, ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps attended the event. According to the Ambassador, the presence of representatives of the Kuwaiti General Staff and military officials proves the depth of historical relations between the two countries.

He revealed that military cooperation between Russia and Kuwait extends back to the 1960s and 1970s. He pointed out that the participation of Kuwait in the event is a reflection of the strength of bilateral and military ties, which are influenced by developments in Eastern Europe. On the possibility of defense or security deals, he indicated that discussions are underway between the two sides, adding that not everything reported in the media is the truth. He said the political consultations between the two countries’ foreign ministries are ongoing at various levels. He revealed that the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister’s visit to Moscow last September will be followed by another round of official-level political consultations in Moscow.

Regarding the Arab-Russian Summit, he clarified that its postponement is at the request of the Arab side for known reasons, emphasizing that it remains on the agenda of Russian-Arab relations and confirms the seriousness of these relations. On tourism, he highlighted the growing interest of Kuwaitis in visiting Moscow and other Russian cities. He disclosed that he is keen on hearing the opinions of Kuwaiti visitors about their experience in Russia, as they speak highly of Moscow as a wonderful tourist destination, particularly the services, security, and quality of facilities and amenities.

On coordination between Russia and countries in the region concerning regional events, he said there have been routine consultations according to the schedule, as well as intensive consultations between Russia, the Gulf states and other Arab countries, given the sensitivity of regional issues, including the Gaza Strip, Palestinian cause and Iranian nuclear program. He indicated that consultations are ongoing with a number of Gulf and Arab capitals on various issues.

He also praised the role of the Sultanate of Oman in mediation efforts, describing its leadership as “wise.” He said Muscat has a distinguished history and track record in hosting regional and international negotiations, making it a suitable venue for launching dialogues and consultations. He said some European capitals are raising sensitive issues, pointing out that Kuwait is not a place for exchanging insults. He added that his country appreciates the neutral stance of Kuwait and its commitment to prevent escalation.
