MOSCOW, Nov 2: Russia has expressed extreme concern over indications that new military action against Iran is being planned, warning that further escalation could worsen the already volatile situation in the Middle East.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Monday that the situation surrounding Iran, which Moscow maintains has been subjected to unprovoked aggression by the United States and Israel, remains complex.
"The conflict remains unresolved; it resonates with and is intertwined with other crises unfolding across the Middle East," Zakharova said.
She stressed the need to intensify diplomatic efforts to normalize the situation and expressed Russia's support for mediators working to advance negotiations between the parties.
Moscow remains ready to contribute to finding mutually acceptable solutions and assisting in their implementation, she added.
Addressing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, Zakharova expressed hope that maritime navigation through the strategic waterway would soon return to normal, taking into account the legitimate interests of countries bordering the strait and other nations seeking safe and unhindered passage.
She also accused the United States of imposing an unlawful maritime blockade on Iran, saying the issue must be addressed as part of efforts to restore stability in the region.
Tensions have remained high since the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on Feb 28, 2026, triggering Iranian retaliation across the region.
Although Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding in June following diplomatic mediation, disagreements over security arrangements, maritime access and control of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz have continued to undermine efforts to achieve a lasting settlement.
Russia has repeatedly called for a political and diplomatic solution, while maintaining that further military action would complicate efforts to stabilize the region.
