Russia, China Veto UN Resolution on Reopening Strait of Hormuz

UNITED NATIONS (AP), Apr 7: Russia and China have vetoed a watered-down UN Security Council resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, despite repeated efforts to dilute the text to secure their abstention.

The Bahrain-sponsored resolution received 11 votes in favor in the 15-member council, but failed after vetoes from Russia and China, while Pakistan and Colombia abstained.

The vote came just hours ahead of a deadline set by Donald Trump for Iran to reopen the vital waterway or face potential strikes on key infrastructure.

An earlier draft of the resolution would have authorized the use of “all necessary means” — UN language that can include military action — to ensure safe passage. However, the final version removed any authorization for force and instead urged countries using the strait to coordinate defensive measures to maintain navigation through the route, which carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.
