Rodri’s award: Deserved recognition or controversial choice?

KUWAIT CITY, July 26: FIFA named Spain midfielder Rodri the winner of the Best Player award at the 2026 World Cup after his contribution helped guide Spain to the title following their 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final.

Few would question Rodri’s exceptional ability. He is a natural leader, a midfield orchestrator, and widely regarded as one of the finest players in the world in his position. However, the debate remains: was he truly the most influential player at the tournament and the rightful recipient of the award?

According to statistical ratings from SofaScore, Lionel Messi finished as the highest-rated player at the World Cup, ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Erling Haaland, and Jude Bellingham, while Rodri did not feature among the top five performers.

Rodri’s numbers also raise questions. The Spanish midfielder finished the tournament without a goal or an assist and was named Man of the Match only once, in the game against Portugal. Meanwhile, Messi earned the award five times and led Argentina to the final, while Mbappé claimed the Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals.

That said, Rodri’s importance cannot be measured solely through attacking statistics. His tactical intelligence, control of the midfield, and leadership were crucial to Spain’s success. Yet awards such as the World Cup Best Player honor have often gone to those who produce the most decisive moments and leave the biggest mark on the tournament.

Ultimately, the discussion remains open: was Rodri rewarded for his tactical influence and role in Spain’s triumph, or did another player make a stronger case for the individual prize?
