RIYADH, May 11: Saudi football fans are bracing for a decisive Riyadh Derby between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal today in Round 32, a match that could significantly shape the title race and determine whether the championship is settled now or pushed to the final stages of the season.
Several scenarios remain in play. If the match ends in a draw, the title race will be extended to Round 34, the final round, with Al-Nassr still holding the upper hand. In that case, Al-Nassr would need to beat Damac in their last fixture to secure the league title, even if Al-Hilal wins its remaining matches. Al-Nassr could also benefit earlier if Al-Hilal drops points against NEOM.
Meanwhile, Al-Hilal’s position has strengthened after Al-Nassr’s loss to Al-Qadsiah in Round 31, putting the “Blue Wave” in control of its own destiny. A derby win for Al-Hilal would swing the title race in its favor, as they would only need victories over Al-Fayha and NEOM to clinch the championship, regardless of Al-Nassr’s final result against Damac.
Historically, only one Riyadh Derby has directly decided the Saudi Pro League title, which came 11 years ago on May 10, 2015. On that occasion, Al-Nassr needed a win to be crowned champion and delivered, thanks to a goal from Mohammad Al-Sahlawi in the 20th minute. The match also saw a rare disciplinary record for Al-Hilal, with three players sent off.
