Rising Gold Prices Spark KD 2 Million Theft by Asian Expat in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 22: The Capital Governorate Criminal Investigation Department has arrested an Asian expatriate who confessed to stealing jewelry and gold bars worth approximately KD 2 million, authorities revealed. The suspect admitted that surging gold prices over the past four years motivated him to exploit his position as the de facto manager of a gold shop, manipulating invoices and siphoning off valuable assets.

A security source said the crime came to light after a citizen, owner of multiple gold shops, commissioned a professional inventory of his stores. The audit revealed a staggering deficit of around KD 2 million in one shop, prompting a police investigation. Questioning of staff led to the expat’s admission, after which he was referred to the Public Prosecution. He has been remanded to the Central Prison, with a travel ban imposed pending recovery of the stolen assets.

Authorities stressed that regular inventory checks and rigorous accounting systems are vital to prevent employees from abusing trust and unlawfully seizing funds.
