Replacing fossil fuels with clean solar energy the goal of ISA

NEW DELHI, Jan 28: The mission of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) is to replace carbon-intensive fossil fuels with clean and renewable solar energy, says Chief of Operations at ISA Joshua Wycliffe. Wycliffe made the statement when he met the GCC media delegation recently. During the meeting, Wycliffe made a presentation on the pivotal role of ISA in ensuring energy security and sustainable livelihoods for the 200 member countries.

He then affirmed that several initiatives toward a green future have been implemented so far. He said one of these initiatives is the Global Solar Facility (GSF), through which ISA is keen on catalyzing clean energy access to Africa. He disclosed that this pioneering initiative aims to attract $10 billion in investments to facilitate clean energy access for 35-40 million African households by 2030. He said the Government of India supports ISA with a contribution of $25 million, in addition to $10 million from ISA and commitments of Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF). He also revealed that STARC project is keen on establishing solar technology and application resource centers in collaboration with the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs in France. He stated that ISA is working with an additional 13 countries to establish STAR centers in a bid to make solar energy the main focus of member- countries to achieve economic growth, environment and social well-being.

He added ISA is committed to creating 30 such centers by the end of 2026. He pointed out that ISA established the Green Hydrogen Innovation Center (GHIC) during India’s G20 presidency to serve as a comprehensive platform that consolidates efforts to encourage the production, use, and trade of green hydrogen to achieve sustainability. He also stressed the keenness of ISA to cooperate with GCC countries to enhance solar energy production. He said the GCC countries are rich in solar energy, thanks to the climate as the Sun shines in these countries most of the year.
