KUWAIT CITY, Aug 1, (Agencies): Kuwait on Saturday strongly condemned what it described as continued Iranian aggression after hostile drones targeted key facilities in the country, prompting renewed international support and regional calls for de-escalation. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the attacks on a government facility in northern Kuwait and civilian vehicles belonging to a private company on Bubiyan Island, calling them a flagrant violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty, a direct threat to its security and stability, and a serious breach of international law, the UN Charter, the principles of good-neighborliness and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
The ministry said the repeated attacks reflect a persistent hostile approach that undermines regional security and escalates tensions, reiterating Kuwait’s legitimate right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, national interests, resources, and the safety of citizens and residents. The Ministry of Defense said Kuwait’s Armed Forces detected hostile drones that entered the country’s airspace from dawn on Saturday and successfully intercepted them.
Official spokesperson Col. Saud Al- Atwan said the drones targeted a government installation in northern Kuwait and civilian vehicles belonging to a private company on Bubiyan Island. The attacks caused material damage from falling debris but no casualties. He affirmed that the Armed Forces remain on high alert and continue coordinating with relevant authorities to safeguard the country’s sovereignty, security and stability. Later Saturday, Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al- Sabah held talks by telephone with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud to discuss regional developments and diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions, preserving regional security and ensuring the safety of international maritime navigation.
The attacks drew swift condemnation from regional and international partners. Saudi Arabia denounced the Iranian strikes on Kuwait and Jordan, reaffirming its full solidarity with both countries and expressing condolences over the death of a worker in Kuwait. Riyadh called for an immediate end to attacks targeting civilian areas and vital infrastructure. GCC Secretary-General Jassem Al- Budaiwi condemned the attacks as a blatant violation of international law and Kuwait’s sovereignty, reiterating the Gulf bloc’s full support for all measures taken by Kuwait to protect its security and stability. Jordan, Palestine and Yemen also condemned the attacks, describing them as dangerous escalations that violate international law and threaten regional peace. All three reaffirmed their support for Kuwait’s right to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its citizens and residents.
China said it opposes attacks on civilians and non-military facilities, urging all parties to exercise restraint and resolve differences through dialogue. Beijing confirmed that no Chinese nationals were injured in the strike on a Chinese company’s facility in Kuwait, although a Nepalese employee was killed, and said it remains in close contact with Kuwaiti authorities regarding the safety of Chinese citizens and businesses operating in the country.
