DUBAI, Dec 25: Astronomical calculations indicate that the Holy Month is expected to begin on March 11, 2024. Emirates Astronomical Society Chairman Ibrahim Al Jarwan has confirmed that starting from the upcoming Ramadan, the month will fall within the winter season, continuing until Ramadan 1453 AH in 2031, which will then transition into the autumn season.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, holds profound spiritual significance as it commemorates the period when the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him). This sacred month, characterized by fasting, charity, and blessings, is one of the five pillars of Islam. Adult Muslims observe fasting from dawn until dusk, reflecting devotion and self-discipline.

The UAE, following the tradition of other Islamic countries, determines the start of Ramadan through moon sighting, relying on official announcements from the moon-sighting committee in Makkah, Islam’s holiest city. The commencement of Ramadan is contingent on the sighting of the new crescent moon and typically lasts for 29 or 30 days.

In the UAE, Ramadan traditions commence in mid-Shaaban with the celebration of Hagg Al Layla. Emirati children, adorned in festive attire, visit neighbors to collect sweets and nuts while singing traditional songs. The daily fasting during Ramadan involves two main meals: Suhoor before sunrise and Iftar to break the fast at sunset, usually initiated with dates and laban.
