DOHA, June 30: Qatar said on Tuesday that technical talks between the United States and Iran are continuing through direct and indirect channels despite heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, although no high-level meetings are currently taking place.
In a statement, Qatar's Foreign Ministry quoted spokesperson Majed Al Ansari as saying U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are in Doha to meet Qatari officials and mediators on regional issues, including Iran negotiations and Lebanon, but will not hold direct talks with Iranian officials.
"There are currently no high-level meetings between the Iranian and American sides under the approved mechanism for the negotiations," Al Ansari said.
He said discussions continue to cover the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear program and broader regional developments, while reaffirming Qatar's opposition to any disruption of maritime navigation through the strategic waterway.
Al Ansari said the initial phase of understandings focuses on clearing mines and ensuring safe passage through the strait, with priority given to protecting the crews of ships and oil tankers.
Addressing frozen Iranian assets, he said Qatar acts only as a financial intermediary under the 2023 U.S.-Iran humanitarian agreement and does not own the funds.
He added that any transfer of the frozen assets depends on mutual agreement between Washington and Tehran and progress in negotiations, which has not yet been achieved.
