Qatar reassures public amid base movements

DOHA, Jan 14, (Agencies): Qatar’s International Media Office (IMO) confirmed Wednesday that the country continues to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of its citizens and residents, emphasizing that this remains a top priority. In a statement, the Media Office said in response to media reports about the departure of certain personnel from Al-Udeid Air Base, noting that such actions are part of precautionary measures amid ongoing regional tensions.

The office stressed that any new developments will be communicated through official channels. Established under Amiri Decree No. 12 of 2023, the International Media Office is responsible for clarifying facts, highlighting Qatar’s achievements and priorities, and strengthening relationships with regional and international media. The office also provides support and guidance to government agencies and communicates Qatar’s policies, official positions, and initiatives to the global community. Earlier reports cite a US official saying that some personnel at a key US military base in Qatar have been advised to evacuate by Wednesday evening. The decision came as a senior official in Iran brought up an earlier Iranian attack there.

The official, who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive plans, described the move at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as a precautionary measure. The official wouldn’t go into any further details about the move, including whether the evacuation was optional or mandatory, if it affected troops or civilian personnel, or the number of those advised to leave, citing the need for operational security. The Pentagon declined to comment on questions about the move.

The State Department had no immediate comment on the potential for any security alerts to be issued for American diplomats or other civilians in Qatar. In June, the embassy had issued a brief shelter-in-place advisory to U.S. citizens in Doha but stopped short of evacuating diplomats or advising Americans to leave the country. The precautionary measure comes as anti-government protests in nearby Iran continue and President Donald Trump has said that he is willing to conduct military operations in the country if the government continues to retaliate against the protesters.
