Qatar, Iran discuss temporary navigation corridor through Hormuz

DOHA, Aug 27:  Qatar and Iran are discussing the possible establishment of a “temporary joint navigational corridor” through the Strait of Hormuz as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran, focusing on efforts to create conditions conducive to dialogue and de-escalation.

The discussions included a proposed “transitional framework” that would provide for a temporary joint navigational corridor through the strategic waterway, as well as joint efforts to clear the strait of mines.

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty of neighboring states and ensuring freedom of navigation while continuing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

Araghchi expressed Tehran’s appreciation for Qatar’s continued diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and support dialogue.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is a vital international shipping route and a major transit point for oil and gas exports from the Persian Gulf.
