Qatar Denies Detaining Iranian Pilots, Says Remains Recovered After Airspace Breach

DOHA, Aug 15: Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has categorically denied claims that Iranian pilots were detained, describing the reports as misleading and particularly concerning given ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.

In a statement, the ministry said contact had been established with the pilots after they breached Qatari airspace and authorities verified their flight trajectory.

It said attempts were made to communicate with the pilots and that, after receiving no response, necessary measures were taken to defend Qatari territory in accordance with international law and the applicable rules of engagement.

The ministry said the circumstances had been explained at the time through official channels.

It also said Qatari search and rescue teams conducted operations to locate the pilots’ remains, describing the teams as highly experienced and internationally capable.

According to the statement, Qatar coordinated with Iran to arrange the handover of the remains of one pilot who was found, in accordance with relevant provisions of international humanitarian law.

The ministry added that Qatar had invited an Iranian team in April last year to visit and review details of the search and rescue operations, but said the Iranian side had not responded to the invitation.

Qatar stressed that the claims of detention were false and said their circulation was particularly surprising amid current diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region.
