LONDON, Dec 18 (Agencies): In London, an evening gown donned by the late Princess Diana has achieved a remarkable sale price of $1.1 million, surpassing its initial estimate by eleven times, as confirmed by Los Angeles-based Julien's Auctions. The black and blue ballerina-length dress, created by designer Jacques Azagury, made its debut in Florence in 1985 and gained further prominence when Diana was photographed wearing it during a visit to Vancouver a year later. The dress, accompanied by a matching illustration, was sold for $1,148,080, setting a new world record for the highest price paid for one of Princess Diana's dresses at auction. The previous record stood at $604,800.
The exquisite dress features a long black velvet bodice intricately embroidered with blue stars, complemented by a two-tier blue organza skirt adorned with a sash and bow. This significant sale was part of the "Hollywood Legends" auction conducted by Julien's Auctions in collaboration with Turner Classic Movies (TCM), encompassing a diverse array of memorabilia. Alongside the iconic dress, a pink chiffon blouse worn by Princess Diana for her 1981 engagement portrait to Prince Charles by Lord Snowdon also garnered attention, selling for $381,000. Crafted by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who later designed Diana's wedding dress, the blouse exceeded its estimated value of $80,000 - $100,000.
