NEW DELHI, India, Nov 5, (Agencies): In response to the escalating air pollution levels in and around India's capital city, Delhi, the Education Minister, Atishi Marlena, declared the closure of all primary schools until Nov 10. The minister also announced that teachers for Grades 6-12 have the option to conduct online classes.
In a statement posted on social media, the minister explained, "As pollution levels continue to remain high, primary schools in Delhi will stay closed until November 10. For Grades 6-12, schools are being given the option to shift to online classes."
The overall air quality index (AQI) in Delhi on Sunday registered at 482, falling within the "severe" category, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research.
Over the past few days, Delhi and its neighboring areas have been shrouded in a blanket of haze, causing discomfort to residents who reported symptoms like itchy eyes, sore throats, and respiratory problems.
Air pollution typically surges in Delhi during the winter months from November to February. Stubble burning by farmers in nearby states, notably Punjab and Haryana, is a significant contributing factor. Other factors include ongoing construction and demolition activities, as well as vehicular pollution.
