LOS ANGELES, Oct 26, (Agencies): A tragic incident unfolded in California when a collision involving two vehicles led to the untimely demise of a 21-year-old pregnant woman. Despite the devastating circumstances, the medical team managed to perform an emergency delivery of her child.

The fateful accident took place at around 8:42 pm on a Tuesday, near the intersection of Blossom Hill Road and Winfield Boulevard in San Jose, California. The San Jose Police Department issued a media advisory providing these details.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office later confirmed the victim as April Zoglauer, a resident of San Jose. Zoglauer was driving her 2008 black Nissan sedan eastbound when it collided with a 2013 white Hyundai sedan traveling southbound.

The white sedan had two unidentified males on board who immediately fled the scene on foot after the crash. The initial investigation by the San Jose Police Department revealed that the white sedan had been reported as stolen.

The investigation into this tragic incident is still ongoing, with no new updates available at this time.

Following the collision, April Zoglauer was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and, regrettably, was pronounced deceased. However, in a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy, medical professionals successfully conducted an emergency surgery to deliver her child, who remains in critical condition.

The San Jose Police Department, in its media advisory, noted that this accident marks the 42nd fatal collision and the 43rd traffic-related fatality in San Jose for the year 2023. Alarmingly, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety, the state witnessed a 7.6% increase in traffic fatalities, rising from 3,980 in 2020 to 4,285 in 2021.

In April, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released its projections for traffic fatalities in 2022, estimating a total of 42,795 people lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis of traffic-related fatalities, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to curb this upward trend. The National Roadway Safety Strategy aims to enhance traffic safety across the nation, with the ultimate goal of preventing such heart-wrenching tragedies in the future.
