MUMBAI, Jun 18: Hundreds of people sleeping on Mumbai’s Versova Beach at night have sparked widespread discussion about housing conditions, migration, poverty, and the growing impact of extreme weather on vulnerable communities.

A citizen journalist shared video and pics showing men, women, and children resting on mats spread across the sand, with sections of the beach transformed into a temporary nighttime shelter. According to reports, many of those spending the night outdoors are residents of nearby slum settlements seeking relief from intense heat and recurring power outages.

Residents said conditions inside their tin-roof homes had become unbearable, with high temperatures persisting well into the night. Many families have reportedly begun spending nights in open areas and returning home after sunrise to escape the stifling indoor heat.

The scenes mirror similar reports from Mira-Bhayandar, where migrant workers were recently found sleeping in the open at Anand Dighe Ground in Bhayandar East. Local leaders from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) visited the site and learned that many of those staying there were residents of nearby neighborhoods struggling to cope with the heat.

The images from Versova highlight the challenges faced by low-income communities during Mumbai’s prolonged spell of hot and humid weather, with public spaces increasingly being used as makeshift sleeping areas.

The video has generated strong reactions on social media, with some users expressing sympathy for families affected by inadequate housing and infrastructure, while others raised concerns about public safety, sanitation and the broader social issues reflected in the scenes.
