Pope Leo XIV says ‘not in my interest at all’ to debate Trump

YAOUNDE, Apr 18: Pope Leo XIV said Saturday that it is “not in my interest at all” to enter into a public debate with U.S. President Donald Trump over the ongoing Iran war, stressing instead that he will continue to focus on preaching a message of peace rooted in the Gospel.

Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane traveling from Cameroon to Angola, the Pope addressed recent exchanges sparked by Trump’s criticism of his peace messaging, which has drawn international media attention this week. He clarified that his remarks are not directed at any political leader personally, but reflect a broader religious call for peace amid escalating global conflicts.

“There’s been a certain narrative that has not been accurate in all of its aspects,” he said, noting that political interpretations of his statements had been shaped by comments made at the start of his trip. The Pope reiterated that his mission remains centered on spiritual guidance rather than political confrontation, as tensions surrounding the Iran conflict continue to dominate international discourse.
