ROME (AP), Apr 13: Pope Leo XIV has pushed back against criticism linked to the Iran conflict, saying the Vatican’s calls for peace are rooted in the Gospel and should not be equated with political actions. Speaking to The Associated Press aboard the papal plane, he said comparing his message to efforts by Donald Trump reflects a misunderstanding of the Church’s mission.
“I will continue on what I believe is the mission of the church in the world today,” the pope said, adding that he does not fear the Trump administration. He clarified that his remarks were not a direct attack on Trump or any individual, but part of a broader appeal for peace.
Pope Leo also criticized what he described as a “delusion of omnipotence” driving conflicts, including the Iran war, and reiterated the Vatican’s stance on reconciliation and de-escalation.
Pope Leo XIV has reiterated his call for peace and distanced himself from political confrontation, saying he has “no intention” of entering into a debate with Donald Trump amid tensions over the Iran conflict.
Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane en route to Algeria, the pope stressed that his message is rooted in the Gospel, not politics. “I am not a politician… I speak about the Gospel,” he said, urging an end to wars and calling for multilateral dialogue between nations to resolve global crises. He also emphasized that he is “not afraid of the Trump administration” and warned against what he described as the misuse of religious teachings for political purposes.
