ROME/ PARIS, Apr 7: Pope Leo XIV has issued a strong condemnation of recent threats made against Iran, calling them “truly unacceptable” and warning that any attacks on civilian infrastructure would constitute a violation of international law.
Speaking to reporters as he left his residence in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, the Pope referred to reported threats targeting Iran and its population, stressing that civilians must never be treated as legitimate targets in conflict. He said the international community has a responsibility to prevent further escalation and protect human life.
In unusually direct remarks, the Pope urged people in the United States and elsewhere to reach out to political leaders and congressional representatives to oppose war and push for diplomatic solutions. His comments came at a sensitive moment, just hours before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Iran to respond to US demands related to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot also criticized the rhetoric, warning against the idea of “erasing a civilization.” He stressed that Iran should not be confused with its governing system, adding that it remains a “great country with a great people,” even as he criticized what he described as the actions of its ruling authorities.
Barrot cautioned that escalating rhetoric and military threats risk pushing the region and the world into a more dangerous phase of conflict. He expressed hope that the situation would be de-escalated and urged restraint from all sides to prevent further instability.
