Planets, Perseids to dazzle Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 11: The Al-Ujairi Scientific Center disclosed that the country will witness several astronomical phenomena on Aug 12-13, such as the new moon of Rabi’ Al-Awwal month and Perseid meteor shower, in addition to the possibility of observing several planets in the solar system, reports Al-Seyassah daily. The center confirmed that at dawn on Thursday, there will be an opportunity to observe many planets like Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, some of which require the use of a telescope to see.

The center said the planets are not actually aligned in a straight line in space, but rather appear from the Earth’s perspective distributed along a region close to the ecliptic -- the apparent path along which the sun and planets move in the sky. It explained that this phenomenon is due to the fact that most planets in the solar system orbit close to each other. It pointed out that what is known in the media as ‘planetary alignment’ is in reality an apparent clustering or alignment from the perspective of observers on Earth and does not mean that the planets are aligned in a straight line in space. It revealed that Saturn and Mars will be among the brightest planets visible to the naked eye over the pre-dawn sky of Kuwait.
