Pilot Linked to 51.5-kg Drug Smuggling Operation At Istanbul Airport

ISTANBUL, Sept 16: Turkish customs and security authorities have arrested a passenger and two alleged associates, including a pilot, after intercepting a drug-smuggling operation at Istanbul Airport.

The operation began when customs officers became suspicious of a passenger identified in the report as Orlando Flores after he arrived on a flight from Mexico. He was stopped and directed to an X-ray screening area, where officers discovered 26.34 kilograms of suspected drugs in his luggage.

Investigators then reviewed the passenger’s movements and identified two other people allegedly connected to him — Andres Felipe Hincape Arongo and Ivan Enrique de Castro. De Castro was wearing a pilot’s uniform and was identified as the pilot of the same flight.

Security teams reportedly tracked the suspects after detecting their links and movements inside the airport. One of the suspects was followed to a hotel, where authorities recovered a further 25.16 kilograms of suspected synthetic drugs believed to have been delivered as part of the same operation.

The case has drawn attention because one of the suspects allegedly used a pilot’s uniform while facilitating the smuggling operation. Turkish officials said airport security teams rely on experienced personnel, extensive camera surveillance and other monitoring systems to track suspicious movements and identify links between suspects.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the alleged smuggling network and the source and intended destination of the drugs.
