The Pentagon has confirmed that Gen. Randy George, the 41st Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, has been asked to step down and will take early retirement effective immediately, according to chief spokesperson Sean Parnell.
The decision marks a significant leadership shake-up within the U.S. military and comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing operations involving United States and Iran. Officials have not provided a formal explanation for the move, and Pentagon sources speaking anonymously said no official reason has been disclosed due to the sensitivity of the situation.
Pete Hegseth has overseen a series of senior military leadership changes since taking office, with this being one of more than a dozen reported dismissals or forced retirements of top generals and admirals in recent months, according to officials familiar with the matter.
Gen. Randy George has served as Army Chief of Staff since August 2023, a position that typically carries a four-year term. A graduate of West Point, he is an infantry officer with extensive combat experience, having served in the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He previously served as military aide to former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin between 2021 and 2022.
The development was first reported by CBS News, which cited multiple officials familiar with the matter.
