Pentagon adds 37 US troops to Iran war wounded tally, bringing total to 861

WASHINGTON, Sept 26: The Pentagon has added 37 US service members to its official tally of troops wounded during the Iran war, bringing the total to 861, The Washington Post reported on Friday.

The increase includes 29 Navy sailors and eight Marines, according to the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS). The database does not specify when or how the 37 service members were wounded.

A Navy official told The Washington Post that all 29 sailors had returned to duty following their injuries.

The Pentagon has previously said casualty figures can be updated days or longer after an injury is recorded, particularly in cases involving concussions and traumatic brain injuries whose symptoms may not emerge immediately.

More than half of the 861 wounded service members are listed under the Pentagon’s “Overseas Operations” category, which covers casualties recorded after a July ceasefire between Washington and Tehran later collapsed. Earlier casualties were recorded under “Operation Epic Fury,” the US military’s designation for the Iran war.

The latest increase comes amid continued scrutiny of the Pentagon’s accounting of US military casualties linked to the conflict. The Washington Post previously reported that additional US military deaths in the Middle East were not reflected in the Pentagon’s public casualty database.
