SHIVAMOGGA, Oct 21: The traditional Dasara Jamboo Savari procession in Shivamogga, Karnataka, was called off on Wednesday after an elephant carrying a silver howdah bearing the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari suddenly turned around and ran through the streets, triggering panic among spectators.
The elephant, Somanna, was carrying the approximately 450-kg silver howdah, also known as the ambari, when the incident occurred shortly after the procession began at Shivappa Nayaka Palace in the Kote area.
As the procession moved along Kote Road, the elephant unexpectedly changed direction and ran back along the route. The sudden movement caused the heavy silver howdah to slip and fall to the ground, reportedly sustaining minor damage.
The elephant’s unexpected charge sent spectators scrambling for safety as police and Forest Department personnel rushed to control the situation and prevent further danger.
According to reports, two cars and three motorbikes were damaged as Somanna ran along the procession route. Authorities moved to manage the crowd and clear the area amid concerns over public safety.
Veterinary officers eventually administered a tranquiliser to restrain the elephant. Somanna was brought under control and stationed at Kote Seetharamanjaneya Temple, where it was reported to be recovering after being tranquilised.
Following the incident, organisers cancelled the Jamboo Savari procession, disrupting the traditional Dasara celebrations.
Elephant selected at the last minuteAccording to reports, elephant Sagar had initially been selected and trained to carry the ambari during the Shivamogga Dasara procession.
However, Sagar reportedly developed leg pain, prompting organisers to select Somanna at the last minute to carry the sacred idol.
Wednesday’s procession was reportedly Somanna’s first time carrying the ambari, raising questions about whether the elephant had received adequate training and preparation for the demanding responsibility.
The precise cause of Somanna’s sudden behaviour has not been officially established. Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the incident are awaited.
Safety concerns after the procession haltedThe incident has raised concerns about elephant management, crowd safety and the precautions required when animals are used in large public processions.
The Jamboo Savari is a traditional highlight of Dasara celebrations, attracting crowds who gather to witness the ceremonial procession carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari.
The sudden disruption in Shivamogga turned the festive occasion into a tense situation as spectators fled from the elephant’s path and authorities worked to bring it under control.
No further details about possible injuries among spectators or the elephant’s condition were immediately available.
